Celebrated by Shakespeare, Verona is indelibly linked to the romantic and tragic tale of Romeo & Juliet. Capital of the province of Verona, this ancient city sits between the River Adige and Lake Garda, and has a history dating back to the 1st century B.C, when it became a Roman colony. Roman ruins and medieval vestiges can be traced all across the city, together with antique palaces, bridges, piazzas and beautiful churches. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the Piazza Bra, with its magnificent Roman Arena; world famous for the operas which take place there in the summer.
Indeed, the city's history, culture and past splendour are renowned the world over and in 2000 Verona was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A compact and very walkable city, Verona is enlivened with elegant cafes, ancient osterie, craftsmen shops and designer boutiques. Visitors flock to the imposing medieval centre around Piazza delle Erbe and the imposing Piazza Bra, but take a little time to wander the backstreets of this lovely city. Here you will find the traditional osterie, where the locals eat and which offer delicious cuisine at very reasonable prices.
